View looking east at the "modern" staircase that is located at the north end of the western edge of the platform on which the Dome of the Rock (Temple) stands.  Leen Ritmeyer noted that this staircase was the only one that was not perpendicular to the wall to which it is attached.

He also noted the line of old paving stones at its base.  The northwest corner of these stones, along with their line pointing south gave him one of the clues as to where the 500 x 500 cubit platform, described in the Mishnah, stood.
