View looking southeast inside the “Upper Room,” also called the “Cenacle” and the “Coenaculum.”  This room was constructed in the twelfth century A.D. and refurbished by the Franciscans in the fourteenth century.  In the early Ottoman Period (sixteenth century) it was turned into a mosque.

According to TRADITION this room is the site of the “Last Supper” (Matt 26:17–30, etc.) and the “Outpouring of the Holy Spirit” on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-47).  Although these events may have occurred in the vicinity they could not have happened here—for the room was built 1200 years after the events!
