View looking down into a “crypt” that is located at the far western end of the interior of the Temple of Zeus.  Note the steps that lead down into this area.  This area may in fact have been an “oracular pit” — that is a sacred place where a special priestess (or priest) may have received divine responses to questions posed by worshipers.

The stone used in the temple is local limestone.
