Hellenistic City Gate 2

 Hellenistic City Gate 2

View from the south looking north. The two, partially preserved, circular towers guard the southern entrance to Perge. They were built in the third century B.C. and were standing when Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark visited the city about A.D. 47.

The twin towers still stand to a height of almost 40 feet [12 m.]! A Roman era agora is visible to the right (east) of the gate as is the beginning of a 980 foot [300 m.] long street leads north from this gate. On the horizon on the left side of the image is the flat–topped acropolis of Perge.
