Hinterland of Seleucia

Picture of the area to the west of Seleucia Pieria where the Titus Tunnel begins—at the large "gash/cliff" in the center of the image.  Note the students at the top of the hill in the upper left of the image.

Seleucia Pieria was a major port that connected Syria with Rome.  The capital of Syria was first here, but then moved to Antioch on the Orontes—a huge city.  This port, 18 miles west of Antioch, then served as its port.

The Apostle Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark set sail from here at the beginning of Paul's First Missionary Journey (Acts 13:4)
