View looking down on to the harbor area of Seleucia Pieria.  In the center of the image, where brown is visible, is the area of the large ancient harbor—now silted up.

Seleucia Pieria was a major port that connected Syria with Rome.  The capital of Syria was first here, but then moved to Antioch on the Orontes—a huge city.  This port, 18 miles west of Antioch, then served as its port.

The Apostle Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark set sail from here at the beginning of Paul's First Missionary Journey (Acts 13:4)
