Nymphaeum of Trajan

Nymphaeum of Trajan

A view of the Nymphaeum of Trajan that was located on the north side of Curetes Street.  This two–storey structure surrounded a fountain basin on three sides—the long open side (visible) to the street (on the left side of the image).  It contained a statue of Trajan with a globe under his feet beneath which the water flowed into the long rectangular basin.

The Nymphaeum was donated by Tiberius Claudius Ariston and his wife between A.D. 102 and 114 in honor of Artemis of Ephesus and Emperor Trajan (r. A.D. 98–117).
