The Pactolus River runs through ancient Sardis. Its sands were a source of gold for the rulers of Sardis and Croesus (560–546), the most famous of the rulers of Sardis, was renown for his wealth (the original "gold finger"). Sardis became a center for the minting of gold and silver coinage.
