Arena in the Stadium

Photograph looking east at the arena that was built around AD 400 at the east end of the stadium.   This area was specifically designed for Roman animal and gladiatorial fights.

The high arched walls above the seating area, are part of the wall the protected Aphrodisias in its late history.

Inscriptions on the seating indicate places for individuals and groups of spectators to sit  Among the associations, tanners and goldsmiths are mentioned.  Men, women, and visitors from other cities attended the contests.
