A view of a section of the "Warehouses of Trajan."  These warehouses were situated on the southern bank of the canal that led from the outer (Claudius') harbor to the inner, hexagonal harbor, that the Emperor Trajan built (r. A.D. 98–117).  These warehouses opened directly on to the canal and the seagoing ships could off load (and on load) their cargoes here.  The floors of the warehouses were suspended about 30 inches off the foundation in order to help preserve the grain from spoiling.
