Ear of Dionysius

View of the exterior of the "Ear of Dionysius."  This limestone cave was carved out of Temenites Hill and has the shape of a human ear.  Because of its shape, it magnifies, and echoes, the human voice as sounds resonate throughout the cave.  Originally, it may have served for water storage.

It is named after Dionysius I, a cruel ruler of Syracuse (ca 432–367 BC).  The legend is that he could hear prisoners who were imprisoned here and it would also amplify the screams of those being tortured in it!
