Columbarium

View of a Columbarium that is part of the eastern Necropolis of Ostia.  Bodies were cremated and placed in burial urns that in turn were placed in the niches that are visible in the photo.

The Columbarium is situated along the Decumanus Maximus (Via Ostiense) on the east side of Ostia near the Porta Romana (eastern gate).   This section of the Decumanus was lined with tombs of elite persons (= necropolis).
