View of the interior of one of the over 30 bakeries that have been discovered at Pompeii.  The red brick structure on the left is the oven in which the bread was baked.  On the right are four industrial–grade wheat grinders.

Note the grinder in the foreground.  It is composed of a black volcanic stone that has a rough surface.  It is "hour–glass" in shape and is placed upon a stationary stone cone.  The hour–glass upper portion is turned by animals or humans, grain is placed into the top of it, and then the ground flour comes out the bottom.
