Helenistic Prince Inscription

Helenistic Prince Inscription

The stomach of the Hellenistic Prince is inscribed in Latin L VI P L XXIIX.  This series of letters and numbers may be a label of this statue in an inventory of artworks that were on display in public buildings in ancient Rome.

This piece was discovered in February of 1885.  It had been purposefully buried in antiquity.  It is not known where it was originally placed although some believe that it may have decorated the Baths of Constantine (ca. A.D. 315).
