Israelite Gate Exterior 1

Israelite Gate Exterior 1

View looking east southeast at the exterior of the partially reconstructed gate at Lachish.  One gate upon another was built in this area, but the current reconstruction reflects what the foundations of the gate might have looked like in the late Judean Monarchy (late 8th to early 6th centuries B.C.).

In the upper left quadrant of the image the break in the wall is that of the gate from the Persian Period (538–332 B.C.).  The rise on the horizon to the right (south) of it is the peak of the Assyrian siege ramp and the Judean counter ramp.
