Jaffa Gate Exterior (3)

View looking east at the Jaffa Gate. The dark area in the center of the image is where a moat used to be, but today vehicular traffic enters and exits the Old City on a road that now covers the moat. To the right (south) of the opening is a tower that forms part of the "citadel." To the left (north) is the tower that is the pedestrian entrance to the Old City (Click Here for a clearer view of this entrance).

Note the three over hanging turrets on the tower on the right (bartizans). From the openings in the bottoms, hot liquids were poured down upon attackers.
