Frescoed Building

Frescoed Building

View of a frescoed wall in one of the buildings discovered in Nahum Avigad's excavations in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Please NOTE - on the left side of the fresco a portion of an elite building is represented!  Clearly visible is the pillar that supports the entablature, the lintel with triglyphs and metopes, and within the frame even a portion of the door!!  What in the world is the building represented on the wall of this (priestly?) building???

The plaster and paint was applied to stones that form the surface of a rubble filled wall—note the surrounding stones.  The smooth plaster is frescoed (or seccoed) with a variety of colors but, following Second Temple Jewish tradition, no human figures are represented.
