View looking east at the "lead up" to what was probably a first century gate in the west wall of the city of Jerusalem during the days of Jesus (aka Second Temple Period).  Note the stairs.  This staircase and possible gate are located just to the south of where Herod's Palace was located in Jerusalem, or it may have led directly into the Palace of Herod.

By the way, Pilate probably stayed in "Herod's Palace" when he came to Jerusalem—from Caesarea—like he did for the Passover when Jesus was tried before him.

The present day Old City Wall, built by Suleiman the Magnificent (1537–1541) is in the background.
