Dome Above Cenotaph of David

Dome Above Cenotaph of David

View looking at the dome over the cenotaph—covered in maroon cloth—that was built over the “Tomb of David.”  Jews have venerated the tomb through the ages.

However, according to the Bible, King David was buried “in” the City of David — namely the lower eastern hill (1 Kings 2:10).  Evidently during the Byzantine Period (A.D. 324–638) the traditions associated with Zion (originally the eastern hill) were transferred to the western hill—which was not inhabited during David’s day (1010–970 B.C.).
