Staircase

Staircase

View of the lower portion of the Herodian Staircase that led from the upper to the lower terrace.  The student is standing on some of the partially preserved stairs.  The stairwell was actually square with a stone column in the center (visible).  The stairs were wedged in between the central column and a sidewall.

This type of construction is also know from Nabatean/Roman/Byzantine dwellings in the Negev.
