Hadrian Inscription

View looking east at one of the Latin dedicatory inscriptions on the west side of the high level aqueduct.

The four–line inscription is set inside of a tabula ansata (a rectangular frame with triangles at each of the short sides—these were often of bronze and attached to stone or wood columns). At the beginning of the second line the name Hadrian is visible.

A number of inscriptions indicate that the Second, Sixth, and Tenth Legions worked on the construction of the west (sea) side of the aqueduct.

The stone that was used in the construction is a fossilized sandstone called kurkar.
