Two Phases

Two Phases

View looking north at a portion of the high level aqueduct at Caesarea Maritima that has broken apart.

The two stages of construction are visible. The portion on the right (east) was constructed by Herod the Great (37–4 B.C.) while the portion on the left (west) was built during the days of the Roman Emperor Hadrian (A.D. 117–138). Note that on the right a decorative cornice is visible—one that was covered up when the later portion was built—a clear indication of the initial two phases of construction.

More recent additions are visible on the top of both portions.
